New Data Shows San Diego Becoming One Of America’s Most Bicycle Friendly Cities

Statistics from newly released American League of Bicycle report shows San Diego bicycle movement has momentum

SAN DIEGO, November 19, 2013 – Bicycle-loving San Diego is more than an idea now – it’s a statistic. In a League of American Bicyclists report released this week, San Diego consistently ranks amongst the top American cities for bicycle commuters and ridership. San Diego County Bicycle Coalition, an organization that advocates for and protects the rights of all people who ride bicycles, has spearheaded the movement to create a strong bicycling culture in San Diego County.

In the report, Where we ride: An Analysis of bicycling in American citiesthe League of American Bicyclists looks at bicycle commuting trends and specific analyses throughout national cities. Statistics reported on San Diego include:

  • Ranked third in cities with over one million residents for the percent of all commuters who ride bicycles– above both Los Angeles and New York City
  • Ranked fifth in cities using multimodal transportation with 7.4 percent of San Diego residents biking, walking or taking transit
  • Ranked 13th city with the most bicyclists, reporting 6,929 people commuting by bicycle
  • A 44% increase in the number of bicycle commuters from 2000-2012

“Livable communities is not a phase nor is it isolated to San Diego,” says Bicycle Coalition Executive Director Andy Hanshaw. “New data prove people want to get around in ways other than cars. They want to live where the city infrastructure is in place to walk, bike and take public transit, and San Diego is the perfect place for that.”

While the Bicycle Coalition is one of San Diego’s strongest advocates for livable communities, there is a full network of activists, local organizations and individuals who work to grow these bicycle communities and continue the forward momentum.

For U.S. cities over Million population, San Diego’s has the LEAST seen volumes of illegal littering, dumping; NOT on TRAVEL+LEISURE’s “America’s Dirtiest Cities” list.
